Sami Jo Cotton-Black joined the Southeastern Oklahoma State women’s basketball coaching staff in 2006 after wrapping up her playing career for SOSU at the end of the 2005-06 season.

During Cotton-Black’s tenure as an assistant, the Storm have posted a 53-32 record and advanced to the Lone Star Conference tournament three times and the NCAA Regional tournament once.

The 2008-09 squad posted a 21-9 record, finishing second in the Lone Star Conference North Division standings and placing a pair of first team selection on the all-conference team in Destiny Brown and Ashley Tucker.

The 2007-08 team posted a repeat trip to the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament, but fell to top seeded West Texas A&M in the opening round.  That squad featured a second team all-LSC-N selection in Jessica Hocker, the LSC-N Co-Newcomer of the Year in Destiny Brown and a total of four players to garner some sort of LSC-N recognition.

The 2006-07 squad posted a seven-game turnaround, including a 9-1 start to the season.  The finished 7-5 in North Division play and earned a post-season berth, falling 56-55 to Angelo State.

Before becoming an assistant she played her final year of eligibility for Southeastern after transferring from Southeastern Missouri State.

Cotton-Black led the team in scoring her senior season at 13.7 per game as well as rebounding at 5.7 per contest.  She earned second team LSC-North Division honors for the season.

Prior to SOSU, she spent one season at Southeastern Missouri State where she was the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year after starting all 27 games and leading the team in scoring.

She began her collegiate career playing for Darin Grover at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where she was a two-time all-region selection, the team MVP in 2003 and an NJCAA Academic All-American.

She is married to Jordan Black and the couple welcomed their first child, Bayler, on March 18, 2009.

A native of Crowder, Okla., Cotton-Black received her degree from SOSU in 2005 and added a master’s degree in 2007.
